  7. DECODING THIS CHART: This chart has been compacted to fit into 80 columns
  8. so it can be viewed on-line. The first column is the name of the compression/
  9. archiving technique. The next field is the file extension given to the
  10. resulting file. After that are 5 columns each for a different operating system.
  11. Each one of these consists of the name of the file/program to undo the given
  12. compression/archiving style and a letter that tells where the file/program may
  13. be obtained. All symbols and letters are decoded at the bottom portion of this
  14. file.

  280. between JPEG "JFIF" format and image files in PBMPLUS PPM, Utah RLE,

  286. PKZIP 2.04g is shareware.  The Encryption version is freely
  287. exportable to all countries except Cuba,Iran,Iraq,North Korea, the
  288. police or military of South Africa, Syria, and Vietnam. (by order of
  289. the US Government)

  291. Some uuencode/uudecode programs are able to read xxencode files.
  292.  
  293. Stuffit Lite 3.0 is the replacement version of Stuffit
  294. Classic 1.6 for Macintosh.  Stuffit Lite is shareware, $25.  Stuffit
  295. Deluxe is the commercial version from Aladdin Software.
  296.  
  297. VMARC, available with the command "TELL LISTSERV AT RPIECS GET VMARC
  298. PACKAGE" from a CMS machine, will decode any CMS terse program.  The
  299. PC version of terse is a commercial program available from IBM
  300. directly.
  301.  
  302. There is a portable 'ZIP' that goes along with unzip50 that is
  303. available from valeria.cs.ucla.edu:/pub/zip19p1.zip.  'ship' is also
  304. available in that same package.  It is a program like uuencode, but
  305. is more robust.  WizUnzip, WZUNZ1.ZIP in the WINDOWS3 dir on
  306. wuarchive (B), is a MS Windows 3 version of Unzip41.
  307.  
  308. There is a set of translators that will allow Stuffit Deluxe to read
  309. btoa, UUencoded files, zip, pack, tar, MacBinary, and others.  They are in
  310. sumex-aim.stanford.edu:/info-mac/utils/stuffit-deluxe-translators.hqx.
  311.  
  312. When using tar.exe for PC's, the order of option flags is important.
  313. For extraction, use tar -xvf <filename>.
  314.  
  315. ARC : From SEA, ARC 6.02 is the latest widespread shareware release.
  316.       It is available at A (ux1.cso.uiuc.edu).
  317.       Also, SEA has ARC 7.10, but it is commercial, not shareware.

  320. When using binscii.exe for an Apple II, there are different file extensions
  321. depending on the type of file being changed.
  322.  
  323. BinHexed files (with the extension .hqx) can be UnBinHexed with BinHex 4.0 or
  324. Stuffit.  BinHex5.0 format is a MacBinary format, while BinHex 4.0 files
  325. are ASCII format.
  326.  
  327. The files listed are only guaranteed to uncompress/unarchive.
  328. To make a compression/archive, further software may be needed.
  329.  
  330. USAGE NOTES:
  331.  
  332. There are certain "standard" combinations of compression used:
  333.   unix - .tar.Z
  334.          (often this will be .taz for PC's)
  335.   unix - tar.Z.btoa (abbrev. to .TZB sometimes) (aka "tarmail")
  336.  
  337.   mac  - .sit.hqx
  338.        - these must be undone in order starting at the end of the name
  339.  
  340. Sometimes an archive may be self-extracting. These will look like normal
  341. executable programs. Simply run them to undo the archive.
  342.  
  343. LZEXE (PC), PKLITE(PC), Imploder(Amiga), and PowerPacker(Amiga)
  344. are executable compressors.
  345. They compress an executable file and attach an uncompressing header so that
  346. the file can still be executed while in compressed form.
  347. The listed programs for these utilities compress files, in order to uncompress
  348. a file with these types of compression, just execute them.
  349.  
  350. DIET (PC) is a TSR program that compresses and decompresses both
  351. executables and data files as needed.
